EUS-guided Fine Needle Aspiration and Biopsy

FNAB combines endoscopic ultrasound with a thin needle to sample lesions in the pancreas, lymph nodes, and other deep structures next to the gut wall.

What is it?

During EUS, a thin needle is passed through the scope channel into a target lesion under real-time ultrasound guidance.

Both cytology (cell smears) and histology (tissue cores) can be obtained in the same sitting.

Who needs it?

  • Pancreatic mass requiring tissue diagnosis.
  • Enlarged lymph nodes in the chest or abdomen.
  • Submucosal lesions of the gut wall.

How it works

Performed during EUS, under sedation. The needle is advanced into the target and tissue is sampled.

Preparation

  • Same as EUS. Blood thinners are stopped in advance.

Recovery

  • Same as EUS. Same-day discharge.

Risks

Bleeding and infection are uncommon. Specific risks depend on the target organ.

Common questions

Things patients ask us.

How accurate is the result?

When tissue is obtained, accuracy is high. In a small proportion of cases the result is non-diagnostic and the test may need to be repeated.
